Builder/Architect Magazine – August 1998
In Many respects, Bill Asdal may be considered a teacher
more than a builder. Although his construction, remodeling and
development company has met with tremendous success, it runs
like a silent machine
behind a man who can be seen assiduously learning, teaching,
and serving the industry. With an undergraduate degree in industrial
education,
a master’s in administration and supervision, and six years of
experience teaching high school behind him, Bill suddenly gave up teaching
in 1978 when presented with the opportunity to build a new custom home…..
They are also involved in property management, rejuvenating and leasing
undervalued or depressed properties….. True teachers never stop
teaching, however. Engaged to speak at numerous seminars about codes,
estimating, diversification and business management, Bill has, over
the past decade, talked not about his own achievements but about the
industry, its systems and methods by which construction professionals
can improve their businesses….”On the home front, while
all this is going on, I needed to reshape by business in a direction
that allowed me to be absent from it and have it keep running….
I’m able to delegate responsibility and coordinate jobs so I can
serve our industry without having to report for work every day. Those
who work with us enjoy the benefits of responsibility, and it changes
the perspective of my involvement in the business……”
WEBWEEK – March 1997
Bill Asdal has purposely kept his construction and remodeling business
small. To grow means to add management, management means overhead,
and “overhead can bury you, in a cyclical business”, he
said. Through smart management and use of technology, however,
Asdal has grown annual revenues….without adding managers. He’s
about to get another tool to help…. Wickes Lumber Co. one of
the largest suppliers to the building industry is rolling out the
new version of its Web site, which offers interactive shopping features
to the public and an extranet where builders can get invoices, look
at accounts and check inventory at 108 Wickes stores….
